44th Street Ventilation – New York, NY
The East Side Access project is the largest public works project currently under construction in the United States. This massive installation of tunnels, tracks and a new concourse under Grand Central Terminal requires boring through both bedrock and loamy soil between Queens and Manhattan. Once completed it connects the LIRR to Grand Central, easing congestion to and from Long Island. The only visible signs many residents see of this massive project have are the ventilation buildings dotted throughout the city. One such building lies on 44th street in Manhattan.
A small unassuming 5 story building, is used to ventilate if tunnel temperatures exceed 105 degrees or in the unlikely event of smokey conditions. Tucked in between a Fedex Store and 9 West it is adjacent to Grand Central Terminal . Future uses for this site will include materials and concrete delivery and some limited personnel access.
